Christmas in Val d’Intelvi

Christmas in Val d’Intelvi will surprise you with its magical atmosphere , made up of events dedicated to folklore and the religious significance of the festival. From the beginning of December and until Christmas Eve, in places such as Laino and Schignano, a particular ritual concerning the Advent calendar is observed. Every day a calendar box is discovered and themed corners are created with the classic symbols that mark the wait for December 25th. You can observe the latter while walking through the streets of the town.

Starting from 7 December, you can enjoy a tour of handcrafted Christmas markets , such as those of Lanzo and San Fedele. If you are traveling with children , do not miss the events related to the iconic figures of the Christmas holidays. The Pro Loco di Lanzo organizes the arrival of Santa’s sleigh, while in Schignano the transit of the Befana carriage takes place. Furthermore , there are numerous cribs to visit , including the “Presepi in Mostra ” of Lanzo .

Particularly suggestive is the living nativity scene which, every year, on January 1st, is set up in Argegno . There is also no shortage of musical events : you can attend the “Santo Stefano band concert” in Laino, or the “Great New Year’s Concert” in San Fedele. Finally, among the Christmas events in Val d’Intelvi, there is one really noteworthy, that is the traditional end-of-year torchlight procession on skis held in Lanzo . At its end you will be delighted with panettone and mulled wine .

Monte Generoso

At the center of a real natural paradise along the border between Italy and Switzerland , Monte Generoso stands out in all its majesty .

For about a century, the rack railway has made it possible to reach the summit at an altitude of 1704 m , starting from Capolago, on Lake Lugano . The route is about 9 km long and passes through a magnificent mountain scenery . From the top you can enjoy a breathtaking view , which embraces the Gran Paradiso chain and the lakes region from above.

This alpine oasis has multiple attractions: it is a perfect destination for those who love regenerating walks in contact with nature, for those with historical interests and for those who want to practice sports (climbing, paragliding, mountain biking)

51 km of trails allow you to explore both sides of Monte Generoso, the Swiss and the Italian one.

The nature

The beauty of the mountain landscape is combined with the wealth of botanical treasures . In fact, thanks to the calcareous soil, the flora of Monte Generoso is particularly luxuriant.
There are about 800 plant species , some of which are very rare.
Flowers are the main attraction for visitors. These, in fact, are larger and more vividly colored than those that grow in the plains, due to the high intensity of solar radiation.

As for the fauna , however, the presence of a colony of chamois that does not fear man and can be observed at close range is singular.

This area is also of considerable geological interest . Monte Generoso is, in fact, a karst massif mainly composed of flint limestone from the lower Jurassic. The area is rich in caves and karst phenomena, both superficial and deep.

Bubbles, charcoal pits and snow

Pastoralism and mountain agriculture were, until a few decades ago, the main activities of this place. To continue to carry them out, the mountaineers had to fight against aridity and water scarcity. For this reason, rainwater collection ponds have been built, isolating the bottom of the area with leaves and ashes from chimneys or outbreaks. These are the so-called “ bubbles “, some of which can be visited right on Monte Generoso. There are also some charcoal burners (open spaces where wood charcoal was produced) and some nevere (cylindrical stone constructions, filled with snow by the farmers during the winter, to be able to store the milk during the summer).

Basilica of Sant’Abbondio

Como , located along the southern shore of the western branch of the homonymous lake , is known for numerous sites of artistic and cultural importance. One of these is the famous Basilica of Sant’Abbondio .

By staying at Il Campeggio ai Colli Fioriti it will be possible to visit Como in the day, since the city is less than an hour from the campsite . The panoramic road in fact allows you to skirt the entire western branch of the lake, until you reach the capital.

The Basilica of Sant’Abbondio , is a Romanesque church of the eleventh century whose history is much older.

History of the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio

The Basilica of Sant’Abbondio is located just outside the center of Como , along via Regina and beyond the Cosia river.
The history of this church seems to date back as far as 400 . Then, Amanzio, third bishop of Como and predecessor of Abbondio , current patron of the Diocese of Como , decided to build an early Christian church to house some relics of the apostles Peter and Paul that he had brought with him after a trip to Rome.

In the year 818, the basilica became a cathedral and was dedicated to Sant’Abbondio.
It was a bishopric until 1013. Subsequently, it was entrusted to the Benedictine monks who, between 1050 and 1095, rebuilt the church in Romanesque style . The church was consecrated by Pope Urban II on June 3, 1095.

Later, the entire building will pass to the Augustinian nuns , then it will become the seat of the Theological Seminary , while today it belongs to the parish of the Santissima Annunciata .
Over the centuries, numerous restoration works have taken place which have also brought to light the perimeter of the early Christian church, currently marked by bands of black marble present on the current floor.

The exterior of the church

The Romanesque façade is marked by pilasters resting on four columns. Of value are the bas -reliefs that adorn the entrance portal.
The Roman round arch rests on small columns that culminate in two semi-capitals sculpted in relief. Two angular eaglets with spread wings, a dove and a stone cat head are visible here.

The two twin bell towers are placed on the sides of the central apse. In 1784 one of the two bell towers collapsed, but was rebuilt trying to make it as similar as possible to the original version.

Along the southern side it is possible to see the succession of the three bands corresponding to the internal aisles, marked by single lancet windows and crowned at the top by a frame of small arches. The rings of the single-lancet windows are made with blocks of Moltrasina squared stone alternated with tuff, to obtain a suggestive two-tone effect .

Chestnuts

Entering the woods it will be easy to find imposing chestnut trees with large and colorful leaves, and be enchanted by the wonderful spectacle that nature offers. The sea urchins are full of chestnuts , good both raw and cooked . Usually each hedgehog contains more than one chestnut and in the autumn they are already quite ripe . With a good dose of patience you can really collect in large quantities!

Mushrooms

Going to the highest parts of the Val d’Intelvi, almost reaching the top of the mountains overlooking the panorama, there are many varieties of mushrooms to collect, of different weights and sizes. Above all, the porcini mushrooms are the ones that are most easily found in this area. Every year thanks to the rains, they grow more and more numerous . Some specimens, then, are particularly beautiful. Just walk along the paths of the woods, and venture into even the most tortuous ones, arming yourself with good boots and a large basket , to go home with a nice booty!

Broletto Palace in Como

From the Camping ai Colli Fioriti you can reach the city of Como in less than an hour, along the panoramic road along the western branch of the lake . Como is rich in architectural beauties and among these, one of the most characteristic is certainly the Palazzo del Broletto .

The history of the Broletto

The building is located in the historic center of the city, in Piazza Duomo . In its medieval past, the square represented the union between religious and political power: the first was symbolized by the Cathedral, while the other by the municipal building , called Broletto , built side by side.

The Broletto, therefore, is none other than the ancient town hall built in 1215 by the then mayor Bonardo da Cadazzo. It was he who wanted it next to the Cathedral as an expression of the new municipal power which, developing more and more in the diocesan territory, limited the civil authority of the bishop. The name derives from the Latin term “brolo” which means “open space”. In fact, in the palace, city meetings and assemblies took place, and it was also the place in charge of the administration of justice.

Over time, political, religious and social changes have changed its function. In fact, in the second half of the 15th century, during the reconstruction of the Cathedral, a large part of the Broletto was demolished to give more space to the latter. The ancient civic tower , in particular, was transformed into the current bell tower of the cathedral . Subsequently, the Broletto became first a theater and then a notary archive.

Architectural style

The architectural features of the Broletto are typical of medieval municipal buildings scattered throughout the Italian territory. Its Romanesque Gothic style , with a rectangular plan, is characterized by two facades embellished by an elegant wall facing in perfectly squared marble bands in gray and white colors, alternating irregularly with others of pale red color, coming from the Lariane quarries.
On the ground floor there is a large porch , while on the upper floor , illuminated by three large windows, there is a large hall , used for exhibitions and conferences. The upper floor is also enriched by a balcony that allows a magnificent view of the main square .

After visiting the Broletto, there is nothing better than resting sitting in the shade of its porch . While a ray of sunshine illuminates the square, it will not be difficult to travel with the mind to distant times , dreaming of romantic loves, ancient crafts, men and women of other times who have inhabited these places.

Path of Expressions

The Path of Expressions is one of the most popular activities for tourists visiting the Intelvi Valley , easily reachable from the campsite in the Colli Fioriti .

This path is famous among the inhabitants of the city of Como and the neighboring municipalities because of its wooden masks made from the wood of the trees. It is one of the most beautiful excursions from the campsite, capable of combining trekking with one of the most original art forms present in the area.

The project

The wooden masks present along the path of the Path of Expressions represent the wonderful work created by the artists of MASCH.ERA , cultural association of the municipality of Schignano.
ERSAF , acronym for the Regional Agency for Agricultural and Forestry Services, also actively collaborated in the project. If materially the masks present along the path belong to the talented artists of the MASCH.ERA, the project would not have existed without the support of the municipality and ERSAF.

The masks

The wooden masks of the Path are authentic natural works of art , and have no equal in the Como area. Walking along the path, you come across tree trunks skilfully transformed into masks, human representations, which is the only unique place in itself already fascinating which is the Intelvi Valley.

Tourists arriving here for the first time find themselves in front of a suggestive scenery , interspersed with wooden sculptures born from the creativity of the artists of the Schignano cultural association, famous for their carnival masks.

Technical features

The total duration of the path of expressions is approximately 90-120 minutes , including both the outward and return journeys. The trekking of the path is suitable for everyone , even for those who have never faced differences in height of a certain importance. The only difficulty is the initial uphill stretch, lasting about 20 minutes, which could be difficult for more than one person.

The initial climb, which starts from the hamlet of Posa, however, is not part of the true path of expressions , which instead begins once the difficult stretch is finished, starting from Alpe Nava . During the pleasant walk, between one sculpture and another, there is the possibility to admire in its entirety the panorama that extends over the Intelvi Valley and the nearby Como. In 120 minutes of walking, the difference in height to be faced is equal to 370 meters.

How to get there

While you are a guest at the Colli Fioriti campsite, you could dedicate half a day to hike the path of expressions .
With your vehicle, drive south, following the signs for the town of Schignano. Before arriving in Schignano, follow the signs leading to the locality of Posa, where the path begins. The last inhabited center you find along your road before Posa is called Occagno, also a fraction of the municipality of Schignano. At the hamlet of Posa you can find the parking area, and then continue from here on foot .
